Sir Brian Souter’s Perth-based Stagecoach Group has given £10,000 directly to the Philippines Typhoon Haiyan Appeal and promised up to another £40,000 to match ongoing fundraising  by its empoloyees

The transport group will make the donation to the Philippines Typhoon Appeal which has been set up by the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) which brings together 14 leading UK charities, as part of the international response to the catastrophe.

In addition, the Group has also agreed to match the fund-raising efforts of its 35,000 bus and rail employees in the UK and North America up to the value of £40,000.

Stagecoach Group Chairman Sir Brian Souter said: ‘The scale of the human tragedy caused by this disaster has touched all of our hearts and everyone wants to respond to the tremendous need of people in the Philippines.

‘We know many of our employees are involved in fund-raising efforts for those affected. As well as making a charitable donation, Stagecoach has also pledged to match pound for pound the fund-raising efforts of our people.’

For many years Stagecoach Group has invested between 0.5% and 1% of the profits from its transport operations in the UK and North America in good causes. Hundreds of thousands of pounds a year go to help health charities, education campaigns and local community projects.

Stagecoach also gives match funding to complement many fund-raising activities by its employees, as well as providing significant in-kind support by donating free transport and assisting with employee secondments to charitable projects.
